Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is Zanzibar's only national park and the home of the Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey found nowhere else on Earth.

The Zanzibar red colobus is the reason to visit. Troops of them live in the groundwater forest and are used to people, so they feed and groom a few metres from the boardwalk while a guide explains their behaviour. The forest also has blue monkeys, bushbabies and a rich birdlife.

A mangrove boardwalk on the coastal side shows how the tidal forest protects the coast, and it is an easy walk in flip-flops. Combine Jozani with a spice farm or a beach afternoon on the way back to the north or the east coast.

FAQs

Will we definitely see the colobus?

Very likely. They are habituated to visitors and live close to the paths, especially in the morning.
