7-Day Machame Route, Kilimanjaro

The whisky route with enough nights for the body to catch up with the altitude.

Highlights

Seven days on Machame, not five, so Barranco and Barafu are not a blur.

Crew wages and food that match what we tell you in the briefing, not a surprise short-staffed mountain.

Summit night from Barafu, then a long descent to Mweka, then a shower you will think about for hours.

Overview

Machame is a camping route. You walk from rainforest into heather, into alpine desert, into a night that is all headlamp and gravel. The Barranco Wall is hands-on scrambling, not a technical climb. People who fear exposure still do it every week with a guide in front and a porter line that knows the holds.

We overnight in Arusha or Moshi the night before the gate. After the climb, sleep. Then beach at Nungwi or a gentle safari; do not book a 5 a.m. Tarangire day trip twelve hours after Stella Point. If you want a kinder profile, the 8-Day Lemosho adds a western approach and another acclimatisation day.

Insurance must say 6,000 m. We check. If it does not, you do not go through the gate on our paper.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Machame Gate to Machame Camp Mount Kilimanjaro

Registration, rainforest walk, 5 to 7 hours. Overnight about 2,835 m. Rain is normal. Gaiters help.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Day 2 Shira Camp Mount Kilimanjaro

Leave the trees, cross the moorland to Shira, about 3,750 m. The mountain is suddenly obvious. Slow is the instruction, not a suggestion.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Day 3 Shira to Barranco via Lava Tower Mount Kilimanjaro

Up to Lava Tower around 4,600 m, down to Barranco at 3,900 m. This is the climb-high-sleep-low day. Eat, even if you do not want to.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Day 4 Barranco Wall to Karanga Mount Kilimanjaro

The wall in the morning, then Karanga Camp. Shorter day, still tiring. Hydrate.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Day 5 Barafu Camp Mount Kilimanjaro

Up to Barafu around 4,640 m. Early dinner, pack the summit kit, try to sleep. You will not sleep much.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Day 6 Uhuru Peak and down to Mweka Mount Kilimanjaro

Midnight start. Stella Point, then Uhuru if you are still moving well. Down to Barafu for a rest, then on to Mweka Camp. This is the longest day of your year for many people.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Day 7 Mweka Gate and hotel Mount Kilimanjaro

Forest descent, certificates at the gate, transfer to Moshi or Arusha. Shower, food, sleep.

Frequently asked questions

What kit do I need?
A list goes out with the invoice: broken-in boots, layers, headlamp, 4-season bag or a hire bag we trust. Cotton on summit night is how people get cold.
How big is the group?
Private climbs are one travelling party. Joining groups are small, usually under eight climbers, with a guide ratio that meets park rules.
Can I add a safari after?
Yes, with a rest night. Look at the 5-day northern safari, not a 4 a.m. crater dash the morning after the gate.
