The old town with its German boma, the Catholic mission and the caravan-era streets.

Lunch by the sea and time on the beach.

Overview

Bagamoyo was the end of the caravan road from the interior and one of the biggest ports on the East African coast. The name is often translated as "lay down your heart", and the town carries some of the hardest history of the region as well as some of its best-preserved architecture.

It is about two hours from Dar es Salaam, and the day gives you a calm contrast to the city. Read more on Bagamoyo.
