Two of the most popular routes to Uhuru Peak, and how to decide which one suits you.
Mount Kilimanjaro stands 5,895 metres above sea level, and the route you choose affects your comfort and your chances of reaching the top.
Machame route
Often called the "whiskey route", Machame is a scenic climb that approaches the mountain from the south-west. It is usually done in six or seven days. The itinerary climbs high and sleeps low on several days, which helps acclimatisation, and the scenery is varied.
Lemosho route
Lemosho starts on the western side and is generally done in seven or eight days. The extra time and the gentler early gradient give your body longer to adjust to the altitude, and the first days are quieter and remote.
Which should you choose?
The key factor in summit success is time to acclimatise, so the longer routes tend to be the better choice if you can spare the days. Consider your fitness, your schedule and your budget, and remember that a slow pace matters more than speed.
