The ruins of a medieval Swahili trading city on a small island off the southern coast, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the nearby island of Songo Mnara.
From about the 12th to the 15th century, Kilwa was one of the richest trading cities on the East African coast, exporting gold and ivory to Arabia, India and beyond. The ruins of its Great Mosque, the Husuni Kubwa palace and the fort built by later Portuguese and Omani rulers still stand on the island.
It is remote, and that is its charm. A local guide leads you through the coral-stone ruins by boat and on foot. It suits history-minded travellers on a longer southern coast trip rather than a short holiday.
