Paje is the east-coast village where the kitesurfers go: a long pale beach, a tide that walks out for metres, and a slower night than Nungwi.
At high tide you swim. At low tide you walk. That rhythm annoys people who were not told about it and suits people who like space. Jambiani next door is even quieter. The reef is a boat ride, not a shore snorkel at low water.
We stop at Stone Town first, then Jozani if you want colobus, then Paje. Families who found Nungwi too busy ask for this coast on the next trip. Kite season follows the wind; if you are not here to kite, the same wind just means a breezy veranda.
After the Machame climb the east coast is a place to sleep late. After Serengeti dust, it is where the laundry finally dries.
