Gombe & Mahale

Chimpanzee trekking on Lake Tanganyika

Western Tanzania is one of the last strongholds of wild chimpanzees. Gombe, where Jane Goodall began her research, is small and steep. Mahale is remote and wild, with beach camps and a large chimp community.

Frequently asked questions

The dry months from May to October are best, when trails are drier and chimps often come down to lower forest.

Are sightings guaranteed?

No. The chimpanzees are wild and range widely, but most treks find them.
